Social Media; Its Effects on Our Mental Health

2 mins read

Hello friends! Welcome back. Trust your week has been great, and you and your family are doing well.

Today, I want to share few things about social media. I know it’s not an uncommon thing. And it is part of the technology that we have in our world today.

Forty to 50years ago, we don’t have anything like Facebook or Instagram. But today, we have everything. We can communicate with our family and friends, we can meet new people online, and we can catch up on what is going on around the world.

According to a recent study, an average person spends at least 2 hours of their time on social media everyday. And when it comes to young people, they are even more obsessed, and sometimes get addicted to it. So, this is something we must pay attention to.

But let’s look at some of the effects of this social media on our health

First, is the effect on our mental health.

Recent studies showed that people who spend more time on social media feel more depressed than people who do not. This is because they see other people’s lives, and feel jealous and dissatisfied with their own lives.

More so, there is challenge in families between couples who are watching other couples online. They see what they are doing for themselves, and they feel compelled to have unhealthy comparisons and unrealistic expectations from each other.

This, in consequence, could make the relationship end in separation or divorce.

In another case, there is also an issue of obsession for likes and comments on social media. We see many people with hundreds of likes, and we wish we were them.

Failure to achieve this could sometimes make us become envious or resentful.

I remember the case of a mother who went through depression because she didn’t get enough likes on the post she made about her son on social media.

And another woman who attempted suicide because she felt nobody liked her post, and that meant for her that nobody liked her. Can you imagine that?

So, being too obsessed with social media could have a toll on our mental health. And I’m not in any way going against the use of social media. I’m only putting caution on its use.

We must not allow our time and energy to be wasted on social media while we have more important things to do.

The bottom line is, it is important we pay attention to what we do with our social media. We can set a time to check our notifications and focus on the good side of it.

Later, we will discuss more on the good side. I hope you will be happy and well, and continue to experience progress in every area of your life. Thank you for reading and God bless you!
