IDENTITY COMES FROM GOD, NOT MAN

One of the greatest struggles many people face is the search for identity. People often look to society, friends, family, or achievements to define who they are. When identity is rooted in the opinions of others, it becomes unstable because human approval changes quickly. The Bible teaches that our true identity must come from God, the One who created us and understands our purpose. When God defines who we are, our value no longer depends on popularity, success, or the shifting opinions of people.

A powerful example of this truth is found in the life of David. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint the next king of Israel in 1 Samuel, even David’s own father did not consider him important enough to be presented. His older brothers looked stronger and more qualified in the eyes of men. Yet God told Samuel, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” While others saw only a shepherd boy, God saw a future king. David’s identity did not come from his family’s opinion or society’s expectations, it came from God’s choice and calling.

Throughout his life, David faced criticism, rejection, and even persecution, especially from Saul. Yet David continued to trust the identity God had given him. Instead of allowing fear or rejection to redefine him, he remained faithful to God’s purpose. His confidence came from knowing who God said he was. This reminds us that when our identity is rooted in God, we are not easily shaken by the praise or rejection of people.

Just like David, believers today must learn to see themselves through God’s perspective rather than the world’s. God calls His people chosen, loved, and purposeful. When we allow God’s Word to define our identity, we gain a deeper sense of confidence, direction, and peace. The opinions of people may change, but God’s view of us remains constant. True freedom comes when we stop trying to become who others expect us to be and start living as the person God created us to be.
